The U.S. Conference of Mayors Honors Miami Beach & Its Successful DecoBike Bicycle Sharing Program
Miami Beach, FL, July 28, 2011
The US Conference of Mayors presented the 2011 Outstanding Achievement in City Livability Award to the City of Miami Beach and its successful DecoBike public bicycle sharing program at Miami Beach City Hall.
For the past 32 years, the Civil Livability Awards Program has been one of the most competitive programs sponsored by The US Conference of Mayors. This program selects community projects that have developed innovative and successful methods to improve the quality of life for city residents.
“Because of its success and innovation, our bike sharing program was selected as the project highlighted in our application,” said Miami Beach City Manager Jorge Gonzalez. “DecoBike addresses our goal of enhancing mobility throughout the community and is revolutionizing the way residents and tourists get around.”
With a program scope of 100 solar-powered station locations and 1,000 custom bikes that is available 24/7, DecoBike has become a valuable mode of alternative public transportation. The program is the country’s most comprehensive bike share system with the best bike-to-resident ratio and most stations per square mile, making it a viable city-wide transportation option.
“DecoBike has demonstrated a high level of professionalism as a bike sharing program operator,” stated Miami Beach City Commissioner Jorge Exposito. “The feedback from the community has been very positive and people really love their bikes.”
“DecoBike is a valuable community partner responsible for the development and implementation of our city’s public bike sharing program. Since its opening, the program has enjoyed great success and a tremendous amount of usage from our residents and visitors alike, and has also earned the US Conference of Mayors award,” stated City Commissioner Michael Gongora who is also an advocate of environmentally-friendly programs. Gongora added, “DecoBike has truly demonstrated their commitment and dedication to our community and exceeded our expectations.”
For other cities seeking bike sharing, DecoBike continues to expand its “green” bike sharing systems beyond South Beach and Miami Beach into other communities as both an equipment vendor and program operator. DecoBike is launching a new program in the City of Long Beach, New York in the summer of 2012 in addition to expanding services into other Florida municipalities.
