City of San Diego selects DECOBIKE LLC to Implement & Operate City-Wide Bikeshare Program
After completing a competitive bidding process to implement a city-wide bicycle sharing program, Mayor Jerry Sanders and the City of San Diego selected DecoBike as the highest ranked firm. Originating as a strategic public-private partnership between the city and DecoBike, the system will be manufactured, owned and operated by DecoBike. “The bike share program is a perfect fit for the San Diego lifestyle as it promotes healthy living and clean transportation,” said Mayor Jerry Sanders. “It will also help facilitate travel to and from trolley and bus stations by providing last-mile solutions for commuters.”
“Building public-private partnerships like this deserves a lot of credit,” said Andy Hanshaw, executive director of San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (SDCBC), who served on the Mayor’s review panel assisting in the selection of DECOBIKE. “We appreciate Mayor Sanders moving ahead to develop this partnership and look forward working with DECOBIKE to make this the best bike sharing program in the country.”
“Bike sharing has found a great new home in the forward-thinking city of San Diego—a city whose residents and visitors embrace life outdoors and value sustainability in their transportation options,” says C. Reese, Chief Marketing Officer for DecoBike. “We look forward to pedaling San Diego forward and delivering a world-class bikeshare program.”
San Diego will receive the next generation of DecoBike stations and custom bicycles. The initial size and scope of the program will be approximately 180 solar-powered station locations and a fleet of 1,800 DecoBikes. “The atmosphere and climate of San Diego make it incredibly well-suited for bike sharing. We are confident our San Diego system will become one of North America’s leading bikeshare programs,” stated Bonifacio Diaz, DecoBike’s COO. Riders can expect to enjoy one of North America’s most comprehensive bike sharing networks featuring excellent bike-to-resident ratios and very favorable station densities in the service zones. The program is expected to come online by fall or winter of 2013.
Residents and visitors in the region will have access to the station network which will stretch from La Jolla to Barrio Logan through Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, Hillcrest, Balboa Park, Old Town San Diego and Downtown San Diego. Flexible memberships and rentals will accommodate the needs of those seeking to use the bike sharing program for both commuting and recreation. A handy webpage and mobile apps will allow patrons to locate stations and available bikes in real-time. Bikes are equipped with LED lighting, adjustable seats and a basket suitable for a laptop or a beach bag.
“We are very excited to be selected by the City of San Diego to implement and operate a public bicycle sharing program for all residents and visitors to enjoy as a fun, healthy and environmentally friendly transportation alternative,” said Ricardo Pierdant, President of DecoBike.
The program will also create a variety of sponsorship and outdoor advertising opportunities for big brands and organizations. With strong financial support from a variety of major brands, bike sharing programs have gained much momentum in the past year. The San Diego program will offer very unique brand recognition for corporate partners, which is heavily enhanced by the goodwill of being a supporter for the community’s bicycle sharing program.
DecoBike is also the bikeshare provider for the cities of Miami Beach FL, Surfside FL, Bay Harbor Islands FL and Long Beach NY. DecoBike’s spotlight program in Miami Beach holds a variety of notable accomplishments, including being the recipient of the 2011 US Conference of Mayors City Livability Award while also featuring North America’s best bike-to-resident ratio and most stations per square mile several times over.
